21 Nov, 2025
Summary
- Scorton Lakes nature reserve gained community asset status.
- Development plans for luxury accommodation were opposed.
- The reserve supports endangered species and public access.

Scorton Lakes, a nature reserve established in 2022, has been officially listed as an asset of community value. This designation offers protection against potential future development, such as the proposed luxury accommodation and spa complex. The application for this status highlighted the reserve's importance for its valuable nature, wildlife habitats, and public amenity value, emphasizing the need for its continued management as a nature reserve with public access.
The former quarry site now boasts a mosaic of habitats supporting numerous red list endangered species, effectively serving as a sanctuary for nature. Despite proposals including eco-friendly technologies like solar panels and thermal systems, local residents formed a campaign group, Save Scorton Lakes, to oppose the development.
The community asset status does not prevent planning applications but grants the community the right to bid for the land if it becomes available. Neighbouring parish councils supported the application, with Brompton-on-Swale Parish Council noting the space's deep value to residents. An unannounced visit confirmed significant, regular use by approximately 40 individuals for various recreational activities, reinforcing its social well-being contribution.
