Urban Kittiwakes Get New Protection Program

In Scarborough, a new program has been introduced to safeguard one of the UK's most endangered seabirds, the kittiwake. This joint venture between the RSPB and Northern Powergrid, named 'Protecting Our Urban Kittiwakes,' focuses on monitoring the birds as they increasingly nest on urban buildings rather than natural cliff faces.

The kittiwake is classified as a globally vulnerable red-listed species, facing significant conservation challenges. Factors such as altered food sources and heightened predation pressures have prompted these populations to seek alternative nesting sites within city environments. This project is vital for understanding these behavioral shifts.
