Nature to Save Scarborough Coastline
23 Feb
Summary
- A £100,000 scheme will use nature-based solutions to combat coastal erosion.
- The project aims to build resilience by working with natural systems.
- Community input and consultation with Sea Life Centre are part of the plan.

A significant £100,000 initiative to combat coastal erosion at Scalby Ness in Scarborough is expected to receive approval. This scheme is designed to implement environmentally sustainable, nature-based solutions, focusing on vegetative materials to bolster natural systems.
The project, funded by a £97,000 grant from the Yorkshire Regional Flood and Coastal Committee Local Levy, seeks to understand coastal processes for designing long-term resilient solutions. These methods are anticipated to yield wider environmental benefits, including carbon capture and biodiversity net gain.
Community involvement is a cornerstone of this plan, with residents encouraged to share local knowledge. The Scarborough Sea Life Centre has also been consulted to assess potential impacts on marine life and the coastal environment. A slope toe protection design will be developed to manage erosion and encourage vegetation growth, improving slope stability.
