Savage Highlands State Park, formerly known as Savage River Lodge, is slated for an late August opening after being purchased by the state in December 2024 for $8.7 million. The 42-acre property in Garrett County, Maryland, has been undergoing significant maintenance and repairs by state officials. These updates include fixing the lodge roof, addressing a bat infestation, and adding primitive campsites. The state acquired this parcel, an "in-holding" within Savage River State Forest, to preserve its character. Initial renovations, costing over $800,000, have focused on essential repairs and upgrades.
The upcoming state park aims to provide resort-style facilities, including cabins and yurts, at significantly lower prices than its previous private ownership. Plans are in motion to make several cabins and yurts accessible to people with disabilities and to outfit them with kitchenettes. While the park will open in phases, with limited rentals initially, it represents a unique opportunity for more affordable forest lodging in Maryland. The lodge itself will reopen, though its restaurant and bar facilities will remain closed, with potential for future concession services to be managed by a private contractor.
