Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve Begins Wildlife Census

The Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) initiated its biannual post-monsoon wildlife monitoring exercise on December 29, 2025. This crucial six-day survey is designed to estimate the populations of both carnivores and herbivores within the reserve's diverse ecosystems.

A total of 304 dedicated forest personnel have been deployed, organized into 76 specialized teams. These teams will meticulously document indirect signs of wildlife, such as pugmarks and scat, alongside direct sightings of animals like elephants and gaurs. The survey spans across four ranges of the Hasanur Forest Division and six ranges of the Sathyamangalam Forest Division.

Data collection will be streamlined using the M-STrIPES mobile application, a critical tool for recording sightings, animal carcasses, and other ecological indicators.
