The Maharashtra government has officially approved the draft Zonal Master Plan for the eco-sensitive zone surrounding Sanjay Gandhi National Park. This significant development, formalized on March 20, 2026, introduces guidelines for regulated development and a focused push for eco-tourism in this vital urban green space.
The plan, prepared in consultation with local stakeholders, addresses the mixed land-use character of the zone, where only 34% is forested, and the remaining 66% is developed. It aims to minimize ecological damage by banning highly polluting industries and protecting water bodies.
A major emphasis is placed on structured eco-tourism. The blueprint includes proposals for eco-lodges, nature trails, and learning centers, coupled with stricter visitor controls and the promotion of eco-friendly transport options to ensure sustainability.
