A mountain lion, a 2-year-old male weighing 77 pounds, was captured in San Francisco after roaming the city for 30 hours. The animal was located in a Pacific Heights apartment building's yard and safely tranquilized by California Fish and Wildlife officials.
Residents had been alerted to the lion's presence the night before, with one witness describing its large size. The cougar, known as 157M and born in Santa Clara County, was previously tracked by a Puma Project collar that had fallen off.
Officials suspect the mountain lion was searching for new hunting grounds. Its release is planned for a natural habitat, preferably an area without other males. A new tracking device will be fitted to the lion.
