Summary
- An 11-ft male saltwater crocodile carcass was found floating.
- Missing leg suggests possible fatal territorial clash.
- This marks the 16th unnatural death in six years.

An 11-foot male saltwater crocodile, estimated to be about 10 years old, was found dead in the Hansua river near Sanaora village. Forest officials retrieved the carcass after it was spotted by locals. The crocodile's missing left leg has led to speculation of a fatal territorial clash, a behavior known among saltwater crocodiles. Additionally, illegal fishing nets pose a significant threat, often leading to crocodiles becoming entangled and drowning.
This unfortunate incident is part of a disturbing trend; it is the 16th unnatural crocodile death recorded in Bhitarkanika National Park in the last six years and the 38th in fourteen years. The park, a vital mangrove and saltwater swamp ecosystem, is home to 1,858 saltwater crocodiles as per the January 2026 census. Conservationists express alarm over these unnatural deaths, particularly for adult crocodiles, as they are protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
