Salisbury Residents Sue Perdue Farms Over Toxic 'Forever Chemicals' in Drinking Water
31 Jul
Summary
- Lawsuit accuses Perdue of illegally dumping PFAS chemicals into nearby streams
- Residents' well water tests show PFAS levels above EPA limits
- Perdue has installed treatment systems on 90% of affected wells

As of August 1, 2025, two Salisbury residents have filed a lawsuit against a Perdue Farms subsidiary, accusing the poultry giant of illegally dumping and polluting the local water supply with toxic "forever chemicals."
The lawsuit alleges that Perdue AgriBusiness has been improperly disposing of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) into nearby streams, causing contamination of the residents' drinking water. Testing has revealed that PFAS levels in the plaintiffs' well water are "well above" the maximum contaminant levels set by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Perdue has acknowledged the issue and taken some steps to address it, including sending letters to over 500 local residents about the elevated PFAS levels and installing point-of-entry treatment (POET) systems on 90% of the affected wells. However, the plaintiffs' lawyers argue that Perdue is not doing enough to solve the problem at its source.

The lawsuit seeks damages and for the court to order Perdue to eliminate and remediate the PFAS contamination in the groundwater and surface waters. The plaintiffs' attorneys say they have a plan for interim remediation measures that they hope the court will enforce.
This new lawsuit comes as a separate proposed class-action lawsuit against Perdue continues in federal court, involving around 550 members of the local community. Both cases aim to hold the poultry company accountable for the PFAS pollution that has impacted the Salisbury area.
