Tiger Census 2026: Sahyadri Reserve Prepares for Full-Scale Revival Count

The Sahyadri Tiger Reserve (STR) is set to participate in the comprehensive national tiger estimation scheduled for January 2026. This exercise is particularly significant for the STR as it aims to reflect the recent increase in tiger populations and the improving prey base within the landscape. This nationwide survey, conducted every four years, assesses tiger status, co-predators, and prey species.

The estimation process will unfold in four distinct phases adhering to national protocols. Initially, a seven-day sign survey will document indirect evidence like pugmarks and scat. This will be followed by a land-use analysis using satellite imagery to assess habitat quality and connectivity, conducted by the Wildlife Institute of India. The third phase involves extensive camera trapping over a month to identify individual tigers and other wildlife.
