Siberian Bears Invade Town After Fatal Attacks
12 Oct
Summary
- Bears are entering settlements, leading to increased hunting.
- Bear population has more than doubled, causing safety concerns.
- Milder winters and food scarcity are driving bear behavior.

In Podtesovo, Russia, hunters are responding to an urgent need for bear control after a fatal attack on two women gathering mushrooms. Mikhail Kondakov, a hunter, stated the bear situation in the settlement is "very difficult" as animals increasingly venture into populated areas.
The issue is not isolated to Podtesovo; Russia's bear population has more than doubled to an estimated 308,000 in the last three decades. Experts attribute this surge to shorter, milder winters and early, dry springs that reduce natural food sources like berries.
Residents express fear, with mothers hesitant to let children play in parks due to bears entering these spaces. The community lives in constant apprehension, worried about encounters even in their own gardens. There are concerns that some bears may not hibernate due to hunger.
Authorities acknowledge the escalating problem nationwide, with state media reporting at least 22 fatal attacks since spring. In the Krasnoyarsk region alone, where Podtesovo is located, seven people died in September. An investigation has been launched into the local environmental ministry for alleged negligence in controlling bear numbers.
