11 Jun
Summary
- Event to educate on ruffed grouse habitat restoration.
- Experts will explain sustainable forestry for grouse.
- Ruffed grouse, once common, are now rare in PA.

Northwest Pennsylvania Woodland Association is hosting an educational program focused on ruffed grouse habitat within the Allegheny National Forest. This event, scheduled for Saturday morning, will feature guided tours and discussions led by forestry experts.
Presenters from the Ruffed Grouse Society, American Woodcock Society, U.S. Forestry Service, and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will share insights into silvicultural processes. These methods involve sustainable timber harvesting designed to create and improve habitat for ruffed grouse and other forest wildlife.
The program aims to address the declining population of the ruffed grouse, Pennsylvania's state bird since 1931. Organizers hope to educate woodland stewards on creating environments that support thriving wildlife populations alongside healthy forests.
Attendance is free, and the event will provide ample opportunity for questions. It is an initiative by the NWPWA, an organization dedicated to promoting healthy forests and sustainable forestry practices since 1999.
