River Ouse Faces Ammonia Crisis: Water Supply Disrupted
23 Jun
Summary
- Elevated ammonia levels in River Ouse prompt EA investigation.
- Yorkshire Water temporarily closed treatment works due to pollution.
- Residents in Easingwold may face low water pressure issues.

The Environment Agency is actively investigating an incident of elevated ammonia levels discovered in the River Ouse. Yorkshire Water reported the water quality issue on Monday, prompting them to temporarily cease operations at their water treatment works to safeguard raw water supply quality. Although the works have since reopened, residents in the Easingwold area may experience reduced water pressure.
This rise in ammonia is attributed to a "third-party pollution incident." Ammonia, a key industrial chemical, can be toxic to aquatic life and harmful to humans if present in high concentrations in water. In response to the ongoing situation and warm weather, Yorkshire Water has established bottled water stations. They are also providing bottled water to customers on their Priority Services Register, apologizing for the inconvenience.
Bottled water collection points are available at the Galtres Centre car park, Easingwold Football Club, and Rawcliffe Bar Park and Ride. Yorkshire Water assures that updates will be provided via their website and text messages.
