A dangerous situation has unfolded in Ridgeland, Mississippi, where a dead, 50-foot pine tree is leaning over a resident's home. The tree, rooted on a neighbor's property, has been a growing concern for homeowner Bankeni Monzilli Tillman since January. Despite Tillman's direct requests and multiple notices sent by the City of Ridgeland regarding code violations, the tree's owner, Carol Thompson, has not responded for five months.
The cracked pine tree is supported by the branches of an oak tree over Tillman's roof, increasing the risk of it falling. Recent storms have caused limbs to fall in the area, heightening anxieties. Thompson's lack of cooperation led the city to schedule a board meeting on May 19, where the property was adjudicated.
The city is now proceeding with removal, having adhered to the 10-day waiting period required by Mississippi law. A vote to select a removal contractor is scheduled for June 16. Once a contractor is approved, the dead tree is expected to be removed by the end of June.
