The demand for rhino horns, driven by superstitions and high prices in illegal markets, has historically fueled poaching. To combat this, Assam established a Special Anti-Poaching Task Force in June 2021, enhancing intelligence gathering, joint operations, and surveillance. The government also publicly burnt approximately 2,500 seized rhino horns in September 2021 to deter illegal trade.
