Summary
- Human rights commission ordered action against resorts polluting AVM canal.
- Resorts failed to submit sewage treatment plant plans and sketches.
- Panchayat seeks Pollution Control Board's help for waste management inspection.

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has mandated swift action against resorts contaminating the Anantha Victoria Marthandam (AVM) canal with sewage. This directive comes after a complaint highlighted the pollution, which has led to discoloured water, foul odours, and fish deaths.
The Kulathoor grama panchayat reported that resort owners were instructed to provide plans for their sewage treatment plants. Failure to comply resulted in warnings that licenses could be revoked. However, the panchayat currently lacks the technical capacity to inspect solid waste management practices.
Consequently, the panchayat has formally requested the Pollution Control Board and Suchitwa Mission to conduct inspections. Their aim is to identify and penalize establishments responsible for discharging waste into the canal, addressing the environmental concerns raised by the commission and the complainant.
