Two adolescent lions, BenTzur and Ori, have begun a new life at the Animal Defenders International (ADI) Wildlife Sanctuary in South Africa's Free State province. These young cats were rescued from the illegal wildlife trade in Israel.
The lions had been stranded for months due to the conflict in the Middle East, which grounded most flights. They finally journeyed for 50 hours from Tel Aviv, via Cairo and Frankfurt, to reach Johannesburg.
Previously seized as cubs by Israel's Nature & Parks Authority during a crackdown on illegally trafficked animals, the lions were being kept as 'trophy pets' for social media. One was found in a basement, the other tied to a tree.
ADI's President, Jan Creamer, highlighted the cruel conditions these animals endure as status symbols. BenTzur and Ori are now settling into their new habitat, exploring their surroundings and responding to their caretakers.
The rescue was costly due to prolonged waiting times and flight scarcity. ADI is now seeking support to cover the lions' long-term food, veterinary care, and living expenses, as they cannot be returned to the wild.
