Rescued Lion and Bear Find New Homes in Germany

A lion and a bear, rescued from illegal private ownership in Albania, have safely arrived at animal sanctuaries in Germany. Erion, a 3-year-old lion, and Flora, a 2-year-old bear, are now in species-appropriate conditions after a lengthy rescue operation.

The animals were discovered by authorities in Tirana based on social media videos. Following veterinary assessments and care, they were transported on December 13, concluding a 70-hour journey. Erion now resides in a sanctuary in southeast Germany, while Flora is in a bear sanctuary in the north of the country.

Both animals were reportedly in poor health, with Flora suffering from malnutrition and dental issues, and Erion having lost his mane. Their rescue underscores the persistent problem of illegal wildlife trade and private keeping of exotic animals across the region, exacerbated by weak enforcement and legislative gaps in Albania.
