16 May
Summary
- Humpback whale rescued in Germany found dead near Denmark.
- Whale was privately funded rescue effort after beaching itself.
- Authorities are verifying identity and retrieving tracking device.

A humpback whale, rescued in March after beaching itself on a sandbank off Germany's Poel island, has been found dead near the Danish island of Anholt. The whale, nicknamed 'Timmy' or 'Hope,' was initially stranded on March 23rd and subsequently freed itself, though it became re-stuck multiple times.
Following failed official rescue attempts, two German entrepreneurs funded a private operation in early May. This involved fitting the whale with a tracking device and transporting it on a barge into the North Sea. The rescue generated considerable public discussion, with some critics arguing it would only cause the animal further distress.
On Thursday, a whale carcass was spotted off Anholt. Danish environmental authorities are working to confirm its identity and retrieve the tracking device, though decomposition and internal gas pose risks, with warnings issued against approaching the body due to potential diseases and explosion hazards.
