Reindeer Suffer at Christmas Events, Charities Warn

Reindeer are reportedly suffering significant physical and psychological distress when used for festive entertainment, a concern raised by the RSPCA and other animal welfare organizations. These charities highlight that captive reindeer often experience trembling, weight loss, and mental fatigue due to the pressures of travel, unnatural settings, and constant public interaction.

An open letter signed by more than 20 animal welfare groups, including Animal Aid and Born Free, urges an end to the practice. They state that evidence clearly shows reindeer suffer from unhealthy body weight, muscle atrophy, and general malaise when subjected to the demands of live events. The charities emphasize that Arctic animals are not suited for such commercial activities.

While 153 Christmas events have transitioned to being animal-free since 2018, some operators face challenges. One such operator in Somerset is now required to obtain a zoo license for her 10 reindeer, a cost that could lead to her business closing and potentially forcing her to euthanize the animals.
