Cooler Homes, Healthier Lives: Africa's Roof Paint Revolution
1 Jun
Summary
- Reflective paint cools houses by 3-4C, improving sleep quality.
- Project Habvia studies health benefits of cool roofs in Africa.
- Cooler indoor temperatures are linked to better mental and physical health.

A project utilizing reflective paint on roofs is providing significant heat adaptation benefits across Africa, as evidenced by a pilot study. Homes with painted roofs experienced an average reduction of 3-4C during peak heat hours, leading to improved sleep and overall well-being for residents. This initiative, known as the Heat Adaptation Benefits for Vulnerable Groups in Africa (Habvia), is being implemented in various communities across South Africa and Ghana.
The Habvia project is rigorously collecting data, including sleep patterns and core body temperature, to scientifically validate the health improvements linked to cooler indoor environments. Researchers are examining the impact in both urban and rural settings to understand the effectiveness of specialized reflective roof paint in diverse climates. The initiative aims to demonstrate that simple, locally sourced interventions can have a profound and immediate positive impact on people's lives.
Initially, the project aimed to evaluate existing heat adaptation strategies. However, upon discovering a lack of such interventions in Africa, the Habvia team developed its own solution using locally manufactured reflective paint. The goal is to scale this intervention to millions of roofs, making it a sustainable and affordable option for communities most affected by rising temperatures and heatwaves.
