Recycling Site Expansion Threatens Cycle Route Safety
7 Nov
Summary
- Expanded recycling site could increase lorries on cycle route.
- Safety concerns raised over increased heavy goods vehicles.
- Route faces removal from National Cycle Network if safety issues persist.
A proposed expansion of a recycling site near Rockliffe, Cumbria, is raising serious safety concerns for National Cycle Route 7. North West Recycling's plan to increase waste processing capacity could significantly raise the volume of heavy goods vehicles using the road between Cargo and Rockcliffe.
Walk Wheel Cycle Trust has warned that this potential increase in lorry traffic poses a significant risk to cyclists. They are calling for crucial safety improvements, suggesting measures such as a 30mph speed limit, warning signs, and improved road markings. Without these enhancements, the charity fears the affected section of the route may be removed from the National Cycle Network.
Rockcliffe Parish Council chairman Geoff Moss echoed these concerns, highlighting the road's already challenging conditions with sharp bends and inadequate lighting. North West Recycling has stated they are open to discussions regarding traffic-calming measures and potentially extending a cycle path. The Environment Agency is currently considering the permit changes but has not yet made a final decision.
