Rawalpindi-Islamabad Drenched: Relief From Heat, But Flooding Fears Rise
15 Aug
Summary
- Heavy rain brought relief from hot weather, dropping temperatures to 30°C.
- Rainfall amounts varied, with Saidpur receiving 65mm and Rawalpindi 18mm.
- Officials remain on alert for potential urban flooding and landslides.
Residents of Rawalpindi and Islamabad experienced significant relief as heavy rains on Friday brought an end to three days of hot and humid weather. The downpour, which lasted until 9 am, lowered the mercury to 30 degrees Celsius.
Rainfall measurements varied across the twin cities, with Saidpur recording 65mm and the Airport 62mm. Rawalpindi itself received 18mm at Shamsabad. Despite the welcome temperature drop, low-lying areas became slushy. District administration and emergency services remained on high alert.
The Meteorological Department forecasts continued rain in the twin cities over the next 24 hours. Moderate moist currents from the Arabian Sea and a westerly wave are influencing the weather patterns.
Authorities have warned of potential urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad/Rawalpindi and other cities, as well as landslides in vulnerable regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan. The Leh Nullah's water level rose but remained under control due to prior dredging.
