Panna Tiger Reserve is celebrating a rare natural phenomenon: a 57-year-old elephant named Anarkali has delivered twin female calves. The births, which occurred nearly three hours apart on Saturday, were closely monitored by veterinarians, who confirmed both mother and newborns are in excellent health. This exceedingly uncommon event has brought significant joy and excitement to the reserve.
Anarkali, a veteran of the reserve since 1986, has previously given birth to six calves. However, this is her first experience with twins. The reserve has implemented special care arrangements, including a nutritious diet for Anarkali and a dedicated team for the calves. This event underscores the importance of the elephant patrol team for conservation efforts.
Panna Tiger Reserve, known for its successful tiger reintroduction program, has now seen its elephant population grow to 21 with the arrival of these calves. The reserve, spanning parts of Panna and Chhatarpur districts, also actively engages in crocodile rehabilitation and vulture conservation.
