Hummingbird Moths Take Flight in Record West Midlands Year
19 Sep
Summary
- Unusual species like hummingbird hawk moths are increasingly spotted.
- The hummingbird hawk moth is migrating from warmer climates.
- 2026 has seen a record number of sightings for this species.
Warmer summer temperatures in the West Midlands have led to an increase in sightings of species previously considered uncommon in the region. Among these is the hummingbird hawk moth, recognized for its furry appearance and swift flight.
This moth species undertakes a summer migration to the UK from southern Europe and northern Africa. James Benwell from the Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust noted that 2026 has been a "record year" for these moths. He described them as easily mistaken for small birds due to their hovering behavior over flowers and incredibly fast wing beats, estimated at approximately 80 times per second.
Benwell expressed that the moths have had a very successful year in terms of numbers, with many more records of sightings than usual. He added that while he personally has not yet seen one this year, he is envious of others who have had the opportunity.
