Fisherman Reels in Rare Great White Shark Off Nantucket
11 Jun
Summary
- Fisherman caught a rare great white shark off Nantucket last weekend.
- He released the endangered shark safely back into the ocean.
- Warming waters are attracting more sharks to the Eastern seaboard.

A fisherman, Elliot Sudal, recounted his astonishing experience of catching a great white shark off Nantucket last weekend. Sudal, a seasoned angler with over ten years of experience in these waters, had previously caught and tagged numerous shark species but never a great white. He described the catch as unexpected and emphasized the critical importance of handling such an endangered animal perfectly during its release.
Video footage captured Sudal and his apprentice reeling in the large shark. Sudal then waded into the water to safely remove the hook from its mouth, a process he described as delicate and crucial for the animal's survival. After ensuring the hook was out, Sudal and his team managed to return the great white shark safely to deeper waters. He expressed immense relief that the release was successful and the shark was safe.
Experts suggest that rising ocean temperatures are drawing more sharks, including great whites, to the Eastern seaboard, leading to more frequent sightings. This phenomenon has also been observed with juvenile white sharks sighted off the coasts of New York and New Jersey earlier this year.
