Firefighters in County Fermanagh have successfully rescued the eggs of a rare curlew bird from a significant wildfire. The curlew nest was situated directly in the path of the blaze, making its rescue a priority amidst firefighting efforts.
During the incident on Thursday, which lasted for eight hours at its peak, 85 firefighters worked to control the fire. Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS), in collaboration with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), ensured the eggs were safely removed.
The rescued eggs are now undergoing incubation, offering them a crucial chance of survival. With only about 150 breeding pairs of curlews remaining in Northern Ireland, this rescue is particularly vital. NIFRS urges the public to exercise caution in the countryside and report any fires promptly to protect vulnerable wildlife.
