Barmer MP Ummedaram Beniwal, accompanied by a Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) team, recently inspected the Ramky industrial waste treatment plant in Balotara. This inspection was prompted by escalating environmental concerns in the Balotara-Barmer region. The MP confronted Rajasthan Pollution Control Board (RPCB) officials, questioning their inaction despite knowledge of chemical waste contaminating the Luni River and local farmlands.
During the site visit, significant technical and operational deficiencies were identified at the Ramky plant. These included insufficient waste treatment capacity, irregular functioning, and inadequate development of green belts and waste storage facilities. The MP emphasized that these shortcomings were leading to the contamination of groundwater and agricultural land, demanding strict action against the company and responsible officials.
The CPCB team is currently conducting a field investigation into pollution originating from crude oil extraction sites and industrial units in Barmer and Balotara. Following the inspection, a review meeting was held with CPCB and RPCB officials, during which water samples were collected for laboratory analysis to assess the extent of the contamination.
