Zoo Animals Get Summer Chill Treatment
20 Mar
Summary
- Zoo enclosures fitted with water ponds and fogger systems.
- Animals receive frozen treats and ORS in drinking water.
- Feeding patterns adjusted for carnivores and reptiles.

The Rajkot Municipal Corporation has initiated extensive measures at Pradyuman Park Zoo to ensure the well-being of its 595 animals during the upcoming summer season.
Large animals like lions, tigers, and bears are now housed in enclosures with water ponds and fogger systems to combat peak afternoon heat. Wooden shelters offer shade, while night shelters are equipped with fans and coolers for comfort. Bears are also being treated to frozen fruit to stay hydrated.
Smaller animals such as foxes and civets have access to specially designed shaded caves. Monkeys receive fruit treats and shade, while birds are provided with dry grass sheds and misting systems. Deer can cool off in mud ponds, replicating natural conditions.
To prevent dehydration, ORS has been added to the animals' drinking water. Feeding patterns are also being adjusted, with carnivores expected to reduce intake by about 10% and reptiles consuming more. These efforts aim to help the animals transition smoothly and remain stress-free throughout the hot months.
