Rajasthan's environment and climate change department is preparing scientific Zonal Master Plans (ZMPs) for the Eco-Sensitive Zones (ESZs) of 13 protected areas. This initiative uses Geographic Information System (GIS)-based mapping to identify forests, wildlife corridors, water bodies, and other vital landscape features. The detailed mapping will guide land-use planning and regulate development in these sensitive regions, ensuring environmental sustainability.
The ZMPs are mandatory for notified ESZs and aim to strike a balance between conservation and community development. They encompass biodiversity conservation, habitat restoration, water management, climate resilience, and sustainable tourism. Rajasthan has already completed ZMPs for several areas, including Nahargarh and Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve, with work in progress for others like Phulwari Ki Nal Wildlife Sanctuary.
The planning process involves extensive field surveys, geospatial data collection, and consultations with local communities and various stakeholders. This collaborative approach ensures conservation measures are implemented effectively without negatively impacting local livelihoods. The state has engaged specialized firms to prepare plans for additional wildlife sanctuaries.
