Rajasthan Wetlands Poised for Protection Status

A technical committee of the State Wetland Authority in Rajasthan has recommended three significant wetlands for notification under the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017. The identified sites are Talab-e-Shahi in Dholpur, Jaseri Talab in Jaisalmer, and Shivsagar Shiwar Talab in Sawai Madhopur. These proposals have met the compliance requirements set forth by the rules.

Further action includes the District Environment Committee of Dholpur proposing the Ramsagar-Talab Shahi wetland complex for designation as a Ramsar site. The technical committee's review, chaired by Vijai N, Secretary of DoE&CC, has concluded. The proposals will now advance to the Chief Minister, who heads the wetland authority, for final notification and Ramsar site designation. Subsequently, they will be sent to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFF) after state approval.

Shivsagar Shiwar Talab, a 60-hectare wetland, supports diverse flora and fauna, including flamingos and sarus cranes, while also providing irrigation to approximately 50 villages and aiding in groundwater recharge. Jaseri Talab, covering 4.6 hectares, serves as a crucial drinking water source for nearby villages and contributes to local biodiversity and heritage tourism. Talab-e-Shahi, spanning 324.1 hectares, is a vital habitat for migratory and resident birds and holds historical significance.
