Summary
- District Collector issued a temporary stop memo on August 2, 2026.
- Protesters alleged fabricated documents for quarry permit.
- Quarrying threatened 50 Scheduled Tribe families and facilities.

Residents of the Thoppilayi tribal settlement in Kannur, Kerala, ended their 17-day protest on August 2, 2026, following a temporary stop memo issued by the District Collector halting operations at a local laterite quarry. The protest committee alleged the quarry permit was secured through fabricated documents by a private individual who purchased land originally designated for landless families.
The tribal community expressed grave concerns that the quarry, located on an ecologically sensitive laterite hill, posed a significant threat to around 50 Scheduled Tribe families. Essential community facilities, including their cremation ground, community building, and drinking water tank, were also reported to be in close proximity and potentially endangered by the quarrying activities.
Previous attempts to establish the laterite quarry since 2023 were met with public opposition. Quarrying resumed under police protection after the owners obtained a favorable High Court order, leading to the recent 17-day agitation. The District Collector's intervention came after departmental inquiries prompted by petitions from the protest committee, revealing a public road within a 50-meter radius of the quarry site as a factor for the suspension.
A public meeting is scheduled for August 3, 2026, to determine the future course of action by the protest committee. The temporary halt in quarrying marks a significant victory for the residents in their fight to protect their community and environment.
