6 Feb
Summary
- An ecological park features sewage treatment below and sports above.
- It is located near the Yellow Sea and Fenghe River in Qingdao.
- The park will treat sewage for 112 square kilometers upon opening.

The Fenghe Ecological Sports Park in Qingdao, Shandong province, has completed the topping out of its main structures. This innovative park covers 19.5 hectares and uniquely combines sewage treatment capabilities within its underground levels and recreational sports facilities on its upper levels. Its prime location, approximately 600 meters from the Yellow Sea and 60 meters from the Fenghe River, underscores its ecological significance and the advanced construction techniques required.
The project, a collaboration involving China Railway No 4 Engineering Group and Beijing Enterprises Water Group, represents an investment of approximately 1.8 billion yuan ($253 million). Construction began on May 27, 2023, and is slated for completion in 2026. The park's composite model of "pollution control underground and landscaping above the ground" was implemented to address environmental concerns while maximizing land use. Several sophisticated construction methods were employed to overcome challenges posed by coastal geology and high permeability sand layers.
Upon its anticipated operational launch in 2026, the Fenghe Ecological Sports Park will serve the crucial function of treating sewage for a surrounding area spanning 112 square kilometers. This development highlights a forward-thinking approach to urban environmental management and public amenity creation in East China.
