Pygmy Blue Whales: Not So Small After All!

Pygmy blue whales, though smaller than their Antarctic counterparts, are still colossal marine animals, capable of reaching approximately 24.1 meters in length. A significant study meticulously examined a vast collection of historical and modern data, including over 303,000 catch records and thousands of sighting records.

This extensive research mapped the distribution of pygmy blue whales across the Southern Hemisphere and northern Indian Ocean. Findings indicated a broad range encompassing the Indian Ocean, southern Australia, and New Zealand, with distinct seasonal movement patterns.

Whales were observed in waters around Sri Lanka and India year-round, with seasonal presence noted near the Maldives. Further analysis revealed migratory links between Indonesian waters and southern Australia, underscoring their dynamic nature.

Their movements are intrinsically linked to oceanographic conditions, favoring areas with high phytoplankton levels and upwelling. These productive feeding grounds influence their seasonal migrations and distribution patterns across the vast oceans.
