Punjab Paints Get Lead Check Mandate

The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has mandated that all paint manufacturers within the state must guarantee their household and decorative paints adhere to specified lead content limits. This directive ensures products obtain certification from accredited laboratories prior to market release.
These new instructions reinforce the Union ministry's Regulation of Lead Contents in Household and Decorative Paints Rules, 2016. These rules strictly forbid the production, sale, import, or export of decorative paints containing lead exceeding 90 parts per million.
The World Health Organization identifies lead as a chemical of significant public health concern. Scientific evidence indicates no safe level of lead exposure, with children being especially vulnerable to irreversible developmental damage.
The PPCB has instructed its field offices to make lead-content compliance a mandatory condition for granting or renewing operating permits for paint manufacturing facilities. Manufacturers must provide proof of certification to dealers and retailers for verification by regulatory bodies.
PPCB Chairperson Reena Gupta emphasized that this initiative will enhance regulatory oversight and safeguard public health, particularly for children who are highly susceptible to lead's adverse effects on neurological development and overall health.
