Pune Maps Green Future: Emission-Free Zones & Pedestrian Focus
14 Mar
Summary
- Pune plans emission-free pilot zone in Shivajinagar to cut pollution.
- Pedestrian-first approach includes improving footpaths and street infrastructure.
- A 35-km structured cycling network will enhance safe mobility options.

Pune is embarking on a significant eight-point strategy to address its growing environmental and infrastructure concerns. Launched by PMC commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, the initiative focuses on improving air quality, ensuring pedestrian safety, and promoting sustainable mobility across the city.
A pilot project aims to establish Shivajinagar as an emission-free zone, a move that could later be expanded. This is part of a broader vision for pedestrian-first urban planning, with planned enhancements to footpaths, crossings, and street infrastructure.
Urban designers and mobility experts will be engaged to redesign major streets, integrating global principles that prioritize pedestrians and cyclists. The strategy also includes developing a 35-km cycling network and improving the public bus service, PMPML, to encourage non-motorized transport and reduce reliance on private vehicles.
Furthermore, a school area safety improvement plan will create safer environments around educational institutions. The PMC has convened various stakeholders, including experts and NGOs, to ensure comprehensive development and effective implementation of these transformative changes. Progress will be reviewed regularly.
