Pune's ₹2,190 Crore Tunnel Project Begins to Boost Water Supply

In a significant development for Pune's water infrastructure, work has commenced on a long-delayed tunnel project that aims to boost the city's water supply. The project, which was cleared by the state technical advisory committee 18 months ago, will see the construction of a 28 km underground tunnel connecting Khadakwasla to Phursungi.

The D-shaped tunnel, measuring 7.8 metres wide and 3.9 metres high, is expected to transport 1,510 cusecs of water by gravity, cutting losses and contamination. The ₹2,190 crore project is anticipated to save around 2.18 TMC of water every year and restore irrigation to approximately 3,471 hectares of land. Once completed, the tunnel will also help maintain a steady water supply for both irrigation and drinking purposes in Pune and the nearby regions, reducing strain on the existing canal system.

The contractor has been given three years to complete the work, which is being closely monitored by the water resources department. Excavation is being carried out using the drill-and-blast method, and the project is progressing as per the schedule. The tunnel will have cement-concrete lining, rock bolts, and shotcrete for added strength and durability, ensuring the safety and engineering standards are met.
