As temperatures rise in Pune, the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park and Wildlife Research Center has activated its comprehensive summer management plan to safeguard animals from heat stress. This initiative, commencing by the end of February and continuing through peak summer, involves the installation of sprinklers and foggers in animal enclosures. Cooling systems are operational, particularly for species like lions, tigers, and sloth bears, to prevent heatstroke. Shaded areas and water ponds are maintained, with ice blocks used during extreme heat to help regulate enclosure temperatures.
The zoo's veterinary team provides crucial hydration support, administering electrolytes and ORS to prevent dehydration and maintain bodily ion balance. Animals also receive multivitamins and nutritional additives, including calcium supplements, mixed into their diet to support health during extreme weather. Anti-stress formulas containing Vitamin E and minerals are added to drinking water. Special care is given to animals like sloth bears, which may receive frozen fruit 'ice cakes'.
Dietary modifications are also a key component, with herbivores like elephants receiving increased green fodder and water-rich fruits such as sugarcane and watermelon. Even species like sambar deer have coolers in their night shelters. Bird enclosures feature sprinklers and shade nets, and peacocks are provided with shaded areas and grapes. Dedicated keepers monitor water availability, ensuring animals have constant access to fresh drinking water. These preparations aim to prevent heat-related illnesses, and officials report no such incidents in recent years.
For visitors, the zoo will extend its operating hours from April 1 to June 15, opening from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. Amenities like drinking water stations and shaded seating areas are available to help visitors cope with the heat. The zoo also encourages public support through its Animal Adoption Scheme, funding animal care and maintenance.
