Technical Glitches Disrupt Pune Water Supply
2 Nov
Summary
- Water pumping improved, but station issues persist.
- Generators and transformers installed to ensure pumping.
- Water allocation reduced to 11 TMC, affecting supply.
Pune's water distribution has faced significant disruptions over the last three days due to technical glitches and power supply failures. While civic officials reported improved pumping at various waterworks units, including Parvati and Wadgaon, technical problems at the Khadakwasla water-lifting station continued to impact operations. Overhead storage tanks in areas like Warje and Chandni Chowk are reportedly receiving water without major disruptions.
To address the ongoing issues and ensure uninterrupted pumping and distribution, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has installed generators and transformers. Residents have expressed frustration over the erratic supply and low water pressure, with concerns about insufficient water availability, particularly as the Diwali festival approaches. Some residents noted that the announced weekly water shutdown has effectively extended to three days, raising questions about the administration's preparedness for summer demand.
In response to the water scarcity concerns, NCP leader Nilesh Nikam has written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, seeking adequate water allocation for Pune. Nikam highlighted that the city's water allocation may have been reduced from 16 TMC to 11 TMC, and emphasized the need for increased allocation to meet Pune's rapidly expanding population and growing water requirements.
