Pune Taps Run Muddy: Civic Repairs Fall Short

The Pune civic administration has announced the completion of repairs to water supply and drainage pipelines at 100 city locations in recent months, aiming to prevent drinking water contamination. Plans are in place to address 80 additional sites in phases. These efforts follow repeated complaints from residents about turbid water and discussions by corporators linking leaking pipelines to public health risks.

Officials noted that major problem areas included Hadapsar, Kondhwa, and Shivajinagar, with field teams undertaking repairs like pipeline replacements and redesigning intersection points. However, residents in areas like Vishrantwadi and Manjari express frustration, reporting a recurring nightmare of contaminated water with muddy appearance and foul odors. They are demanding permanent solutions and regular quality checks.

Elected representatives, including former mayor Vaishali Bankar and corporator Ashwini Landge, are demanding a more extensive intervention. They highlight that sewage mixing with drinking water remains a persistent issue, and question the effectiveness of current investments in water infrastructure. Activists are urging the administration to ensure safe drinking water and prevent future contamination incidents as efforts to identify and rectify vulnerable spots continue.
