Brave Volunteers Save Dehydrated Snake in Pune Heat
25 May
Summary
- Volunteers rescued a dehydrated snake during a heatwave.
- The snake was revived by offering it water from a bottle.
- Reptiles are vulnerable as they cannot regulate body heat internally.

Urban wildlife in Pune is suffering due to the relentless summer heat, but acts of kindness offer hope. On May 19, volunteers at the Anandvan Foundation's urban forest site discovered a severely dehydrated snake, motionless and partly buried in soil. The non-venomous rat snake appeared exhausted from the intense heat.
Volunteers carefully moved the reptile into the shade and offered it water from a bottle. The snake immediately began drinking, slowly regaining its strength and mobility before slithering back into the forest. This incident underscores the critical vulnerability of reptiles to extreme temperatures, as they rely on the environment to regulate their body heat and cannot cool themselves internally.
Wildlife experts and facilities like Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park are taking intensified measures to protect animals during the harsh summer. Zoo director Rajkumar Jadhav confirmed that coolers, fans, and foggers are being used to maintain safe temperatures for reptiles and other animals within enclosures, ensuring their well-being amidst the unusually high temperatures.
