Pune Rivers Choked: MPCB Orders Full Sewage Treatment
8 Apr
Summary
- Nearly 500 MLD sewage discharged untreated into rivers daily.
- MPCB mandates full sewage treatment capacity within six months.
- 100% sewer network coverage required within four months.
The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has issued a stern directive to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), demanding immediate action to address severe sewage treatment and river pollution issues.
As of the current date, Pune is generating around 980 million liters a day (MLD) of sewage. A significant portion, nearly 500 MLD, is discharged untreated into the Mula and Mutha rivers through various channels, causing continuous pollution.
In response, the MPCB has mandated that PMC must achieve full sewage treatment capacity within six months and complete 100% sewer network coverage within the next four months. The regulator requires a time-bound action plan to intercept major drains and halt direct discharge into the rivers.
Furthermore, the MPCB has directed PMC to implement measures to control air pollution, improve solid waste management infrastructure, and enhance waste collection efficiency through more vehicles, manpower, and streamlined door-to-door collection services.
