Monsoon brings snakes to Pune homes: Rescues surge
18 Jul
Summary
- Snake rescues in Pune have significantly increased this monsoon.
- Hatchlings of venomous snakes like cobras and vipers are common.
- Urban expansion and construction drive snakes into residential areas.

As the monsoon season begins, Pune has seen a dramatic increase in snake rescue calls. Volunteers and wildlife organizations report that snakes are frequently entering residential complexes, construction sites, and farmlands. These animals are seeking dry shelter or hunting prey like rodents and frogs. In June alone, rescuers captured a record number of snakes, exceeding last year's figures. Popular rescue locations include Undri, Kondhwa, and Hadapsar, with snakes being released back into forest areas.
A concerning trend is the high number of rescued snake hatchlings, including those of highly venomous species such as cobras and Russell's vipers. Some rescue operations have involved groups of ten to fifteen baby snakes. Alongside venomous species, rescuers are also relocating non-venomous snakes like rat snakes. Rare sightings, such as the bamboo pit viper, have also been reported this season.
Experts attribute this surge not only to weather patterns but also to ongoing urban expansion and construction activities. Ground vibrations from heavy machinery can force snakes from their burrows. Additionally, snakes are sometimes found as 'hitchhikers' in car bonnets after drives. Residents are advised to maintain a safe distance, keep snakes in sight from afar, and immediately contact the forest department or authorized rescuers.
