Record Bird Rescues as Heatwave Intensifies

An unprecedented heatwave gripping Pune and its surrounding districts has led to a record number of bird rescues. Wildlife rescuers are responding to an alarming daily surge of seven to eight cases involving dehydrated, exhausted, or heat-stressed birds, primarily black kites and eagles. These birds are often found near depleted water sources or on open ground, too weak to fly. The extended summer and lack of natural water sources are placing immense pressure on urban bird populations. Local residents have become crucial in assisting these distressed animals, with many spotting birds in critical condition and alerting rescue services. The situation has prompted extensive rescue efforts, with over 600 birds already rescued across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region since March, with dehydration being the primary cause. Vulnerable birds are also at risk from starvation, disorientation, and poor air quality. Rescue calls typically peak during the hottest parts of the day, with specific areas identified as hotspots for distressed birds. The recovery process involves careful rehydration and stabilization in a controlled environment before the birds are released back into the wild. Similar trends are being observed in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area, with rescue organizations working tirelessly to address the high volume of calls for birds suffering from severe dehydration.
