1 Jul
Summary
- Indian gaur trapped between two water pipelines near Vishranti Nagar.
- A joint operation involving forest, fire, police, and PMC units.
- Gaur was tranquilized and safely lifted out using ropes and a crane.

A sub-adult Indian gaur was safely rescued on Tuesday after becoming trapped between two substantial water supply pipelines in Hingne Khurd, Pune. The challenging two-and-a-half-hour rescue operation was a collaborative effort by the forest department, Pune fire brigade, Pune police, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), and RESQ Charitable Trust.
Initially reported as a cow, the animal was identified as a wild gaur, wedged tightly between the pipelines. This necessitated a careful approach, involving passing ropes and a harness beneath the sedated animal. A veterinarian administered a tranquilizer to ensure the gaur's safety during the extraction.
Rescuers, supported by firefighters and a crane, successfully lifted the tranquilized gaur. It was then transported to the department's Transit Treatment Centre for medical evaluation and observation. Officials are investigating the gaur's route into the urban area, likely from the Sinhagad forest region or Velhe. The event underscores the increasing instances of wildlife venturing into urban fringes and the critical need for inter-agency cooperation during emergencies.
