Following a tragic landfill collapse at Moshi that claimed nine lives and caused a city-wide garbage crisis, Pune's Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is proactively planning a shift to decentralized solid waste management. The civic body has proposed seven locations across the city for new facilities. These sites are intended to process waste closer to where it is generated, reducing the burden on any single dumping ground.
The proposed facilities will accommodate various functions, including waste segregation, recycling, waste-to-energy generation, and the production of biogas and biofuels from organic waste. PCMC is also exploring the possibility of processing plastic waste into usable products. Officials are currently conducting thorough technical assessments of the shortlisted sites to evaluate suitability, environmental impact, and logistical feasibility.
PCMC is committed to developing these projects in an environmentally conscious manner, ensuring minimal disruption to residents. The final selection of sites will involve comprehensive feasibility studies, necessary permissions, and the consent of local elected representatives. This initiative marks a significant step towards a more resilient and modern waste management infrastructure for Pune.
