- Rare migratory birds like European rollers were sighted.
- The event highlighted the importance of protecting Pune's habitats.
Birders in Pune achieved a remarkable feat on Wild Bird Day, October 10, by identifying 254 distinct bird species. This extensive count was the result of a day-long birding marathon involving over 100 participants from the Pune Birding Community.
The diverse group of birders, ranging from children to seniors, explored various habitats including grasslands, wetlands, and forested areas within the Western Ghats region. Their efforts yielded sightings of several passage migrants, such as European rollers, blue-cheeked bee-eaters, and lesser cuckoos, which utilize the area during their extensive migratory journeys.
Notable sightings also included the Eurasian hobby, a fast-flying raptor, and the great grey shrike and Indian vulture, species whose populations are in decline. The blue, white-bellied blue flycatcher was also a rare find in the Western Ghats. Organizers emphasized that these observations highlight the ecological significance of Pune's habitats, especially its grasslands, for supporting migratory bird populations.
