This measure is in direct response to residents, including watchmen and staff in housing societies and commercial areas, resorting to burning wood, biomass, plastic, or coal to stay warm during the cold nights.
The PMC has declared that any open flames used for bonfires will result in penalties. Municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram stated that such activities contribute significantly to air pollution, releasing harmful particles like PM10 and PM2.5, carbon monoxide, and dangerous gases.
This initiative underscores a commitment to public health, addressing concerns that the smoke from bonfires exacerbates respiratory conditions such as asthma. The ban is effective immediately, with the civic body enforcing penalties to ensure compliance and maintain air quality.
