Providence Turns Trees Into Treasures
11 Jul
Summary
- Fallen logs are transformed into mulch, lumber, compost, and furniture.
- The urban wood depot is a public-private partnership utilizing former industrial lots.
- Materials will be available at free or reduced cost for community members.

Providence has established "The Wood Lot," an innovative urban wood depot at 45 Salem St. This initiative, born from an eight-year land acquisition process, is a public-private partnership that revitalizes five former industrial lots previously plagued by illegal dumping.
The depot repurposes wood waste from tree care, forestry, pruning, and storm cleanup into mulch, dimensional lumber, garden materials, and artisan pieces. Previously, the city incurred costs for wood disposal.
Managed by The Shop Enterprises, The Wood Lot will offer mulch for free and other wood items at below-market rates. Community members can access these materials through the Parks Department, supporting Providence's climate-friendly objectives and circular economy principles.
Nilsson envisions community programming, including furniture-making classes, with proceeds helping to offset operational costs. This approach mirrors successful models like The Steel Yard, fostering education and material reuse. The project is designed to be cost-neutral.
