Easter Warning: Don't Disturb Nesting Birds!
2 Apr
Summary
- Ground nesting birds need protection during breeding season.
- Disturbances, especially with dogs, can cause birds to abandon nests.
- Report any intentional or reckless damage to wildlife authorities.

Authorities in Northern Ireland have issued a public appeal for caution regarding ground nesting birds this Easter break. The call comes after incidents of disturbance were reported, especially in the Upper Lough Erne area of County Fermanagh.
Breeding waders, which nest in various habitats like wet grasslands and bogs, are particularly vulnerable during early spring, their critical breeding season. Species such as curlews, lapwings, redshanks, and snipes have experienced significant population declines in recent years.
Their nests are legally protected under the Wildlife and Natural Environment Act (NI) 2011. Repeated disturbances, particularly those involving dogs, can cause these birds to abandon their breeding sites, jeopardizing their attempts to raise young.
Officials emphasize the importance of enjoying the countryside responsibly, respecting local bird populations and other wildlife. Investigations can be launched into intentional or reckless damage to nesting areas, and the public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the police.
